Virginia Museum of the Civil War
Located in New Market, Virginia, the museum provides opportunities to reflect upon the Battle of New Market which raged on the same location, May 15, 1864. In addition to the museum, the site includes a visitor center for the Shenandoah Valley and a 300-acre battlefield park preserving the core areas of the battlefield and historic farm.
The museum focuses on the Civil War in Virginia with artifacts, photos, and dioramas. The 1864 Battle of New Market is featured. Be sure to catch the Emmy award winning film Field of Lost Shoes (2000) and the brand new Kaminsky Gallery of Civil War Firearms.
The museum was dedicated in 1970 as a monument with its metal drum-like rotunda and stylized rifles leaning against it. Inside is a red carpet representing sacrifice and a graceful ramp signifying the forward motion of the VMI Cadets charging up Bushong’s Hill.

New Market, Virginia - November 10, 2018 - Caroline and I were treated to this very interesting American Civil War museum in New Market Virginia today. Penny loved the long walk around the battlefield. We enjoyed the very well done documentary and the dozens of exhibits. Great day for photography too!
